Hello Parents! Here is a quick little update on the great things that are happening in 4/5 P!
At the moment we are studying geometry in math. Yesterday, your child was introduced to a new geometry word, translation.
The word translation in geometry has a very different meaning from the one used in everyday language, when we talk about translation from one language into another. In math, translation refers to sliding a shape or an object along a straight path. For example:
In geometry, people say that the triangle on the left has been translated to the right.
Ask your child to find some designs in the home or garden in which translations (slides) have been used to make patterns (e.g., wallpaper, designs on clothes, rows in the vegetable garden). Your child is also encouraged to look through magazines or newspapers for translations.
Any time you can give to your child in talking about the idea of translation will benefit your child's mathematical growth and development.
Thank you for any help you have the time to provide :)
Literacy:
In media literacy, with both grades, we have been discussing implied and over messages in the media An implied message give you a feeling. For example, some advertisers imply that you'll look cool if you use their products. An over message tells you something directly and gives you information. Students will be creating their own cereal box labels by using implied and overt messages. Something that you can do to help your child understand these concepts at home is to try and identify these messages while watching television commercials, or when passing by a billboard.
For science:
Grade 4: We have discussed the 3 types of rocks, and will have our quiz tomorrow on them. We are now going to be discussing minerals. When at home, ask your child to name the different types of rocks, give an example of one, and see if they can tell you how they were created.
Grade 5: We have begun our unit on conservation of energy. Students are in the process of identifying the different types of energy that there are. When at home, ask your child to tell you the different types of energy and to give you an example of each one.
Thank you parents for the constant communication whether it be through the agenda or through a phone call. Student achievement is highest when both school and home are connected. Please continue to sign your child's agenda every night :)
Thank you,
Mrs. Prestia
